In honor of Pride, I have compiled a list of 10 of my favorite quotes about love. Many of them are sad because I like sad things; they make me happy.
I enjoy this quote, even though it is quite depressing, because Toni Morrison always breaks my heart in the best way, but also because it talks about how love isn’t always about how you experience it, but how you can be recreated in love’s image
I watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower way before I read the book. When I heard Paul Rudd utter this quote, I wanted to bawl my eyes out because it hit me in a truth I don’t think I was ready to discover. By the way, the book is more heart-breaking than the movie.
In high school, Sarah Dessen was one of my favorite authors. Talk about me being a teen pining for romance. I like this quote because it shows the inevitable nature of love, no matter how difficult the circumstances or how hard you try to fight it. However, I do not condone love that hurts. Just because the love is there, doesn’t mean you should be.
The Alchemist was one of those books that I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did and surprisingly, it taught me a lot about the nature of love. I find this quote to be true not only in romantic relationships, but this is how it should be for all relationships with humans (and animals and plants and the Earth in general).
James Baldwin tells us beautifully that love isn’t easy. Them love growing pains can be hard. For some (definitely not speaking from experience), that pain can define an experience as being love.
The Notebook is one of my absolute problematic favs for romantic movies. I’m pretty sure this line was never in the book, but every time I see Ryan Gosling’s intense Scorpio eyes boar into Rachel McAdam’s hopeful face and utter that line, my heart levitates out of my body.
Great Auntie Maya (and I’m using the term Auntie as a term of highest respect and not a demeaning, racist, desexualized label) gave me another fantastic quote about love transcending obstacles if it is meant to be. But again, you should NEVER jeopardize your physical or emotional safety because of love.
My girl Brené (I totally know her personally) is the master at talking about vulnerability. Love is a living thing that needs to be taken care of, and not only the needs of the love between two (or more) people, but also the love within ourselves. Ain’t that just beautiful?
We all are out here in this world trying to be loved. Celie couldn’t have articulated it any better.
A common theme in Rupi’s poems is always how to love yourself. No matter how broken you feel or how much someone says you don’t deserve love. See the Stephen Chbosky quote above.
These are just a few of my favorite love quotes. Share some of yours with me 😊
